Irene Liu Chooses to Make a Difference in Her Home Community
Irene Liu's parents immigrated to the United States in the 1960s from Taiwan. In addition to looking for economic prosperity, Irene's parents also admired the generosity of Americans toward neighbors and non-family members and the country's history of philanthropy. Blessed throughout her life with good health and opportunities, Irene's parents taught her that the more you receive, the more you should give. "I believe it's important to give back to the community," she says. One of her favorite charities assists underserved children and youth in Southeast Washington, DC, by offering homework clubs, mentoring, day camps and fun outings. She enjoys giving to a small community organization that does so much good in this community. "I really admire the work that they are doing with local children. Also I know that in a fiscally tight economy, some of the grants they normally would have received were unavailable. They are committed to providing hope and encouragement to youth in Washington, DC, and I want them to be able to continue their mission. Perhaps, someday, these kids will work at one or more of the Federal agencies," Irene concludes.
