Cause of the Week: Housing and Shelter

Housing and Shelter Washington, D.C., has one of the highest rates of homelessness in the country. Over 550,000 people in America may be homeless on a given night, with over 120,000 being children under the age of six. Many factors may contribute to homelessness, including a traumatic life event, natural disaster, loss of a job, family conflict, physical disability, mental illness, substance abuse, or domestic violence. Charities that combat homelessness provide basic housing needs, as well counseling to rebuild the life and the home.

Here's how you can make an impact:

  • $25 provides 16 hot and nutritious meals for homeless men, women, and children in a metropolitan area.
  • $300 provides a family with a safe, affordable home for one month.
  • $480 provides a winterization kit for three displaced Syrian families seeking refuge in Iraq.
