A new season for the Combined Federal Campaign of the National Capital Area (CFCNCA) is almost here. CFCNCA will hold several meetings for charities and federations that will outline the requirements to participate in the Charity Outreach Program and discuss other important information on the upcoming campaign.

2010 Large Federal Department and Agency Briefing

In preparation for the 2010 CFCNCA, there will be a special briefing for departments and agencies raising nearly or more than one million dollars during the previous campaign. This briefing will update "million-dollar accounts" on what's new for the 2010 campaign, share important event dates and raise campaign awareness.

Secretary Locke and Tim Brant Highlight Commerce's Kickoff

Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke, announced their goal of $3.8 million	ABC7 Sports Director, Tim Brant, provided the event's keynote address

The U.S. Department of Commerce officially started their 2009 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) on November 2, with a kickoff in their Hoover Building. Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke, provided remarks that encouraged his fellow employees to support the CFC this year. "Due to the economy charitable giving is down, that's why it is so critical to talk to your colleagues about the importance of the campaign," said Secretary Locke. "Our support means more than ever," he said.

ABC7 Sports Director, Tim Brant, provided the event's keynote address. Mr. Brant talked about how it was his dream to get into the sports journalism business. "There are a lot of others out there with a dream that you are making come true when you support the CFC," he said.

The Peace Corps held their 2009 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) kickoff today before a raucous crowd in their Shriver Hall. Employees dressed as cheerleaders led cheers of "C-F-C!" while others held pro-CFC signs and banners to express their support for this year's fund drive which they've named the "Bring it Home" campaign.

"Why should the Peace Corps care about the CFC anyway?" asked the Corps' Chief of Staff, Stacy Rhodes. "It is because our core mission is very much like the exact purpose of the CFC campaign? We can expand our fight against poverty, hunger, disease and help build the capacity of people in need of support and an opportunity to improve their lives," he said.

A "Cheer contest" involving all eight floors of their building

Volunteers led cheers of "C-F-C!" and "Bring it Home!"	They held a contest to see which floor could yell the loudest

Assistant Coach, Torrey Cunnigham, explained how the "Cheer Contest" worked	Chief of Operations, Volunteer Recruitment and Selection, Arnie Claudio, warmed up the crowd before the start of the event

Some Peace Corps employees came dressed as football players	Different floors yelled very loud during the "Cheer Contest" to try and win a week's membership in a local health club

Four Thumbs Up for Interior's CFC Kickoff

As part of their 2009 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) kickoff, the Department of Interior (DOI) held auditions for their first annual "DOI's Got Talent" competition. The actual event will take place on December 9, but DOI employees flocked to their Sidney Yates Auditorium today to witness fellow co-workers try-out for a spot in the final round. Camilla Ihenetu, Bruce Sheaffer, Lindsay Dubin, and Gareth Rees were the official judges and it was up to them to either give a thumbs up or down to the participants.

Contestants included:

-East Coast Hackey-Sack Champion, Ken Somolinos of DOI's Office of Bureau of Land Management

-The vocal group, PVE3, featuring Wendy Davis, Joy Pietschmann and Corita Waters from the National Park Service

-The Office of Assistant Secretary, Land and Minerals, Pat Watkins, showed off her dance moves to the music of Michael Jackson

-The puppetry of Lillie Simms from the Office of Communications


World class hackey-sacker, Ken Somolinos, showed off his moves	Lillie Simms and her "manequin" entertained the audience

Corita Waters, Joy Peitschmann and Wendy Davis of the group PVE3 performed a traditional song in Latin	Pat Watkins performed a Michael Jackson routine

USDA Produces a Stellar CFC Start

Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, prepares to turn in the ceremonial first pledge of the USDA campaign

Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, submitted the U.S. Department of Agriculture's first Pledge Form today at their 2009 kickoff.

"President Obama has spoke of our country reconnecting as a community, and that's what the CFC is all about," said Mr. Vilsack in his keynote address. The Secretary told of being born in a non-profit orphanage and how the kindness of others impacted him personally. As USDA's CFC Chair, he encouraged his fellow employees to participate in this year's campaign.

"It's not about 'can I afford this pledge?', it's about 'can I afford not to?'," he said.

Library of Congress Cuts the Ribbon on their Charity Fair

CFCNCA Associate Director, Annece Perry, LOC CFC Vice-Chair, Robert Gee, and LOC Campaign Manager, Luashawnna Malachi, cut the ribbon signifying the start of the Library of Congress 2009 CFC Charity Fair

The Library of Congress (LOC) held their annual CFC Charity Fair in their Madison Hall on Wednesday, October 14. The event allowed LOC employees to become aware of CFC-supported charities in this year's campaign. It also enabled them to learn of the many e-Giving options available to donors. LOC employees staffed a computer station and tutored their co-workers on how to operate the online charity database, perform online pledging and donate via either credit or debit cards.

The Charity Fair was just one of the many CFC programs the LOC has scheduled for this fall. Upcoming campaign events include an entertainment gala, book sale and white elephant sale.

Director Berry Highlights OPM's Kickoff

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) began their campaign before a full house in the Alan Campbell Auditorium on Wednesday, October 14. "The CFC is the leader in workplace giving with the biggest campaign, the lowest overhead and the most money raised," said OPM Director, John Berry. Director Berry stressed participation as the means to meet their 2009 campaign goal, and urged his fellow employees to consider the campaign this year. "We raised over $1 million since 2004, and this year's goal is to raise over $225,000. I know we can do it," he stated.

The event was hosted by the Director of Office of Modernization and HR Line of Business and OPM's 2009 CFC-Vice Chair, Reginald Brown, and included the following highlights:

Remarks from fellow Federal employee, Stan Stewart. Mr. Stewart told the story of how CFC-supported agencies helped him as a young man

USPS Headquarters has the CFC Power

"We've got the Power!" said Toni Cook, the 2009 CFC Campaign Manager for the USPS Headquarters

"We've Got the Power" is the theme of this year's United States Postal Service Headquarters' 2009 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). Their Campaign Manager, Toni Cook, stated this early and often during her welcome to fellow employees at their CFC kickoff event held on Friday, October 9, in their Ben Franklin Room. Ms. Cook had the honors of emceeing the program and her enthusiasm towards the CFC seemed to be contagious. From the music performed by the U.S. Postal Service Band, to the organization's CFC campaign staff entering the room in a large dance line, the kickoff was certainly charged with a high level of energy.

"Our organization thrives in building strong communities," said Vice President, Employee Resource Management and their 2009 CFC Vice-Chair, Deborah Giannoni-Jackson, during her keynote address. "John Rockefeller once said ‘Think of giving not as a duty but as a privilege,' and he was right". Ms. Giannoni-Jackson told her own personal story of how the CFC helped her and her family when they lost her father and brother to brain cancer. "You may think your contributions are insignificant, but I'm here to tell you that they are not," she said.
