2008 Communications Contest

Photo of a C F C display featuring a fortune teller

DIA placed this display in their lobby during their 2008 CFC campaign.  The red box contained a video projector that placed an image on the fortune teller's crystal ball.

In 2008 the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) won in three categories (Best Poster/Display, Best Website and Best Photography and Use of Images).  They developed a unique theme where they imagined their CFC participants as a community of caring people, and drawing on the globe in their DIA shield, created Smallworld DIA, a Global Community with a Big Heart. Smallworld was a little town in a parallel universe, and each time a DIA employee submitted a CFC pledge, the population of Smallworld increased. The theme was an ideal allegory for DIA and supported their top campaign priority for 2008, increasing CFC participation.

Some of the marketing ideas they created included:

  • A 20- by 8-foot Photograph Display with enlarged pictures of CFC events and DIA employees doing charity work.
  • CFC Heroes a DIA-produced video looped on a flat-screen showing testimonials from three employees.
  • "Burma Shave Signs". These were consecutive red-and-white signs with rhyming CFC messages. The last sign always said Support CFC - Hurricane Gustav was soakin'/And Hurricane Ike was smokin'/But be not dismayed/Our commitment is made/The CFC coffers we're stokin'/Support CFC. The signs changed every 10 days.
  • A Talking-Head display which had a mannequin (Claire Voyant) reading a crystal ball. Inside the ball a series of talking heads mysteriously spread CFC messages.
  • The World's Largest CFC Poster.  A massive floor-to-ceiling mural that was 30-yards wide and 30-feet tall. Their inspiration was to add comic-style dialogue balloons that get people in the mural talking about CFC.
